Why Building Fundamentals Beats Chasing Crypto Trends

Updated October 10, 2026. Revised with sources and current examples. Several statistics in earlier versions, attributed to Cambridge, Harvard Business Review and LinkedIn, could not be verified and have been removed.

Every few years crypto produces a new gold rush: the 2017 coin-offering boom, the 2021 NFT frenzy, and more recently AI tokens and meme coins. Each wave makes a few people rich, leaves many more worse off, and teaches the same lesson. Lasting results come from fundamentals, not from catching the trend at the right moment.

Why trend-chasing usually fails

Gartner’s Hype Cycle describes the pattern well: a new technology triggers a peak of inflated expectations, then falls into a trough of disillusionment before settling into real, productive use. By the time a trend is everywhere on social media, most of the easy gains are usually gone.

Crypto has shown this repeatedly. The collapses of 2022, from the Terra stablecoin to the FTX exchange, hurt people who had piled in without understanding what they owned. More recently, Bitcoin rose to about $126,000 in October 2025 and then fell by roughly a third; and on October 10, 2025, more than $19 billion in leveraged bets was wiped out in a single day. People who bought at the peak with borrowed money were hit hardest.

Four fundamentals that last

1. A clear purpose. Know what you are building or why you are investing before you start. A project that chases every new narrative rarely finishes any of them. Write down your goals and let them decide what you say no to.

2. Understanding before money. Learn how something works before you put money into it: how a token is issued, who controls it, where the yield comes from and what happens in a crash. If you cannot explain it simply, you are not ready to invest in it.

3. Relationships and reputation. In a field full of anonymous accounts and short-lived projects, being trustworthy and consistent over years is a real advantage. Partners, customers and readers come back to people and businesses they trust.

4. Doing things properly. The rules are getting clearer. The European Union’s MiCA regulation has fully applied since December 30, 2024, and in 2026 the U.S. SEC and CFTC issued joint guidance on which tokens are securities. Projects and businesses that kept good records, disclosed honestly and followed the rules early are better placed now than those that cut corners.

What this looks like in practice

  • For investors: decide your allocation in advance, buy on a schedule rather than on hype, avoid borrowing to invest and keep good records for taxes.
  • For builders: solve a real problem, charge for real value and plan to still be operating after the next crash.
  • For creators: show your work, cite sources and correct mistakes in public. Trust compounds; hype does not.

This site is a small example. We are rewriting older articles to add sources and fix outdated claims, because content that is accurate and honest is worth more over time than content that is merely fast.

The long game

Trends will keep coming. The people and projects still standing a decade from now will mostly be the ones who treated each new trend as something to understand, not something to chase.
